Suicidal Thoughts

The idea of suicide is nothing short of a bold-faced lie that the enemy uses in an attempt to steal, kill, and destroy someone’s life (John 11)! I’ve lost over a dozen friends to this lie, and I almost became a statistic myself. However, God gives us this solid truth to combat the lies of the enemy:

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”‭‭

– Romans‬ ‭8:18‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Truth #1: We will SUFFER, but God will SUSTAIN.

Contrary to prosperity theology, living for God does not lead to perfect health, riches, and happiness. In fact, the Bible highlights that we WILL face troubles (John 16:33), it’s better to be lowly in spirit than proud (Prov 16:9), and that God is close to the broken-hearted (Psalms 34:18). This doesn’t mean we should try to be upset all of the time, but we should never fully disconnect from the reality that we live in a broken, sinful world. And what better way to connect to Jesus than experiencing the same emotions of loneliness, abandonment, and rejection He faced! Jesus suffered even to the point of death, but it wasn’t just for Himself. It was for you and me.

TRUTH #2: God’s plan for you is bigger than what you’re going thru!

“...so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”‭‭

– 2 Corinthians‬ ‭1:3-4‬

God desires to give us a supernatural peace even in the midst of life’s worst circumstances (Phil 4:7). He wants to show up for us, and use us to show others that He will show up for them as well! This concept helped me push thru some really hard times because I envisioned myself getting through it, and then helping others who are going through the same struggles.

TRUTH #3: You’re not alone.

I remember times, where it seemed like every single person I depended on, was nowhere to be found in my deepest moments of hopelessness. Not only have I experienced the gut-wrenching emotions of losing multiple people that I love to suicide, but I’ve dealt firsthand with many temptations to take my own life.

But the only reason I’m still alive today is that I accepted the truth that I am not alone, and I never was. God has been there loving me every step of the way, and he’s there for you as well!

If you ever find yourself in an emergency situation call 911, or the suicide hotline 800-273-8255. Counseling, mentorship, and church community are also great resources to help with this struggle.
